If you splash out on a top-of-the-line overlocker or coverstitch machine, but use only a few functions you may have overspent by as much as $1000 for these functions. On the other hand however, if you are looking to gain more sewing skills, have a particular need & want to increase your sewing time in the future, it may be wise to buy a machine you will grow into. For instance, you may want to start a home-based business in the future—so the extra functionality & control of a more expensive machine will be handy when the time comes to do that efficient, bulk sewing work.

NOTE: There are some variations to the above. There are some Coverstitch-only machines available for instance, which if you have the space & budget, are a good option for the time they save in setup. As with any sewing machine however, The Sewing Machine Doctor suggests it is wise to be honest with yourself when purchasing an overlocker, as to what functions you will realistically need. Features that are not used have still cost you money, and for most home sewers a normal 4-thread overlocker will handle all that is needed.
